As winter camping season approaches, we’re testing a new diesel heater from Sunster. The company claims to manufacture heaters for many well-known brands, but we’ll focus on reviewing their unit and comparing it to an existing model to see if it stands out.
The Sunster diesel heater has a toolbox-style design, housing the fuel tank, heater unit, and fuel pump inside. Key external components include:
Additionally, the unit comes with a remote control, built-in controller, and Bluetooth app compatibility. The power cord has standard leads, requiring an adapter for a cigarette lighter connection. The package also includes a muffler, exhaust, clamps, and an insulated 3-inch heater hose, which is unique among diesel heaters and helps minimize heat loss when heating tents or workshops.
We compared the Sunster heater to the Hcalory SS2, a well-regarded model used for camping. At first glance, both units appear nearly identical except for differences in remote controls and controllers. Sunster claims that their controller is superior and that their unit is the quietest diesel heater on the market—a bold claim, given that all manufacturers make similar promises.
Upon testing, the noise level stood out as the most impressive feature. On level 5, only a faint sound from the blower was noticeable, with minimal pump noise. Even at level 8, the pump remained silent, making it significantly quieter than other heaters, even those modified for noise reduction. At level 2, which is the usual setting for rooftop tent heating, the typical ticking noise from the pump was nearly inaudible.
While the heater performs well out of the box, a few improvements could enhance efficiency:
The Sunster diesel heater is an impressive contender in the market, particularly due to its remarkably low noise levels. If its performance in real-world winter camping matches our initial tests, it could become a top choice for campers seeking a quiet and efficient heating solution. Further testing in cold outdoor conditions will determine if it lives up to its claims, but first impressions suggest it’s a standout product.
